Three city restaurants have been named among the Top 10 Best New Restaurants in Canada by enRoute magazine.
No other city this year has three entries in the top 10.
“Edmonton felt like a different city than the one I’d visited on my four previous tours, and the new hockey arena is a game-changer,” enRoute restaurant critic Andrew Braithwaite said Thursday in a news release. He dined in more than 30 new restaurants in his search for the 10 best.
“The cocktail scene has always been strong, and there’s clearly a passion for creating art on the plate, too.”
Bar Clementine (11957 Jasper Ave.) landed at No. 5 on the list, Cafe Linnea (10932 119 St.) placed sixth and Alder Room (10328 Jasper Ave.) was No. 10.
Chef Ben Staley of Alder Room said he was shocked to be included, given the restaurant had been open only a month when the nomination came in.
“It’s very validating,” Staley said. “We’re trying to do something very different from what Edmonton is used to. It’s nice to have people leave happy.”
Local judges Mary Bailey of The Tomato and journalist Omar Mouallem were among the judges who contributed Edmonton nominees to the list, which was announced Thursday evening in Toronto.
Being recognized by enRoute is a rare honour for Edmonton. Corso 32 and RGE RD made the top 10 list in 2011 and 2014, respectively.
Profiles of the 2017 winners will appear in the November issue of enRoute, Air Canada’s inflight magazine. For more details, go to enroute.aircanada. com.
